Ferentz heads to Iowa

Posted by pperillo on February 19, 2012 – 2:02 pm

The University of Iowa made official what was originally made public two weeks ago by The Gazette (Iowa) by hiring former Patriots tight ends coach Brian Ferentz as its offensive line coach. The move was announced on the school’s official website with a comment from Ferentz’ father and Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz.

“I am excited to have [linebackers coach] LeVar [Woods] and Brian, two men with strong ties to our program and high school football within the state of Iowa, join our staff,” Kirk Ferentz said. “LeVar and Brian had great careers at the University of Iowa and both have enjoyed unique experiences and opportunities since their graduation. I am confident they will make positive and significant contributions in all areas of our program.”

Ferentz, who oversaw dominant seasons from Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez at the tight end position in 2011, spent the last four years in New England, first as a coaching assistant in 2008 before moving to offensive coaching assistant the following year. He was officially promoted to tight ends coach at the start of 2011, and helped tutor perhaps the most productive season the league has ever seen at the position.

This marks the first opening on the Patriots coaching staff this offseason. Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien left to become head coach at Penn State following the Super Bowl but his spot had already been filled by Josh McDaniels, who assumed those duties following the loss to the Giants. Offensive assistant George Godsey, who was rumored to be joining O’Brien in Happy Valley, remains with team after spending the bulk of his time tutoring quarterbacks, rookie Ryan Mallett in particular. Perhaps he could be in line for a promotion similar to the one Ferentz received a year ago.

It would’ve been nice to get RAC back on the defense.

Non-story.Hernandez and Gronk pile up the numbers without a coach.
