Quick Kicks: Commissioner’s ‘Thank You’ to fans

Posted by escalavino on February 7, 2012 – 3:24 pm

As he does from time to time, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sends out an e-mail, addressed to the league’s millions of fans worldwide, to the various media who cover this game. The latest one came to us moments ago. Here is the text of that letter, in full, for those of you not on Goodell’s e-mail distribution list …

To NFL Fans:

Now that another remarkable NFL season has concluded, let me express my gratitude on behalf of all 32 NFL teams for your incredible support. Record numbers of you watched at home, made your way to the stadium, and connected with the NFL in numerous other ways during the 2011 season. Your love of football is what makes the NFL special.

We are proud of the quality of the game today. From the individuals and team skills on display in every game to the record-breaking achievements of future Hall of Famers, the 2011 season was extraordinary on many levels.

It finished up with some of the most exciting playoff games of recent years leading to a tense, drama-filled Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots that was the most-watched show in the history of television. What a tribute to our players, coaches, and fans!

As good as it’s been, I believe the NFL’s best days are ahead. Our responsibility in leading the league is to protect and enhance the bond between our game and the passionate fans who sustain it. We know we have to earn your trust every day and prove we are worthy of your amazing support.

Our commitment to improve everything we do is ongoing. We are not done yet. From the game on the field to the fan experience at home — and everything in between — there are ways we can do even better. We owe it to you, the fans, to believe in better and strive for more. Our game has always evolved and that will continue. I encourage you to visit our new web site -– NFL.com/evolution –- to explore how the game has improved over the past century. There are more good changes to come.

Our mission is captured very simply in these four words: Forever forward. Forever football. Thank you once again for your passion and commitment to the game we all love.

Roger Goodell

Goodell translation:As long as the networks continue to vie for the rights to broadcast league games at astronomical prices and factoring in the ancillary businesses, the registers will continue to ring, assuring that the usual suspects will get wealthy while the fans will be gouged in the process. We can only hope that in light of the above, NFL retirees hopefully will be treated fairly, not being left to drown in medical bills for injuries sustained during their playing days. There is still much to be done to take care of those who gave their lives to the gridiron.

First have a tutor give the Giants lessons in manners of sportsman conduct on and off the field win or lose. The Patriot way is what I would use as role models for children and adults. They look and act as gentlemen, well spoken and intelligent team players. Football is a rough contact sport but should not include rudeness or ignorant unsportsmanlike behavior as displayed by the Giants team. That dimeans the fact of winning the Lombardi trophy. Patriot fans are proud of their team and will cheer them on until they win the Super Bowl again no matter what. A true fan will cheer them even if they don’t win. We love Tom Brady and the Patriots.

I am a loyal Patriots fan. The way the Pats team was treated by the Giants at Superbowl was disgraceful. The Giants have tarnished the Lombardi trophy by their rude behavior. As for my Patriots you had a good season and fought all season with injuries etc…Do not hang your heads because of the loss you will bring the trophy home again with Tom Brady at the helm. Wes Welker hold your head high nothing to be down about, your a great player and you belong in Boston with the Patriots Team. Side note for Mrs.Brady: you go girl! I would have done the same thing for my husband, at the end of the day Tom Brady will always be the best NFL Quarterback and Eli Manning you don’t stand a chance as you and your team lack the class and manners needed to be ranked with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
